Legal Clinic of Kateb University held a one-day seminar on “Legal Clinic; Goals and Mission” on October 15, 2019, in the meeting hall of the university.
The program began with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran by Mr. Mahram Gawhari, a student of Law Clinic. Then, in the opening part of the program, Dr. Mohammad Musa Jafari, Vice-Chancellor of Kateb University, paid attention to the importance and position of the legal clinic in universities. He added that in the past, universities only dealt with academic programs, but today that view has changed, and universities are offering practical and practical training in addition to academic programs. Kateb University has also taken important steps in this direction, and the establishment of a legal clinic is a valuable step in this direction.
In the continuation of the program, Professor Amin Mohseni, the director of the Legal Clinic, addressed the issue of the Legal Clinic as a point of connection between the university and the society and added: “The main mission of universities is to influence the society”. The legal clinic established a link between university and the community especially the lower classes and the poor. Vulnerable people in the community should not be left alone. One of the responsibilities of the university in connecting with the community is to help ensure justice. Universities provide social justice through academic education and legal justice through the legal clinic. At the end of his speech, he referred to the record of the legal clinic of Kateb University in the previous period and while emphasizing the continuation of the previous path, he promised more brilliant achievements.
Mr. Abdul Ahad Farzam, head of the regional office of the Independent Human Rights Commission, was one of the special guests on the program, among other speakers at the seminar. Mr. Farzam spoke on the subject of possible cooperation between the Commission and the Legal Clinic of Kateb University. He noted the importance of the Legal Clinic’s position on access to judicial justice as one of the fundamental human rights, and promised to work with the Commission on behalf of the Commission. He added that the commission is ready for any possible cooperation with the legal clinic, including four axes of possible cooperation.
Ms. Najla Rahil, deputy director of the Afghan Independent Bar Association, was another keynote speaker at the seminar. In her speech, Ms. Rahil addressed the important and serious duties and responsibilities of lawyers and appreciated today’s actions of the government. He added that problems such as lack of coordination in the judiciary and the lack of attention to lawyers, etc., which have existed in the past, are declining and it is hoped that with the improvement of this situation, judicial justice in the country will be institutionalized and implemented. Ms. Rahil emphasized that lawyers, given their job sensitivity, should have the legal ethics to perform the duties of a lawyer and adhere to the rules of procedure, and to keep the secrets of their clients and never think about anything other than transparency, law and order. He added that the legal clinic is an opportunity for students to progress. Participating in the program will help them be acquainted with real issues and get out of theoretical discussions. After graduation, students will be fully aware of the counseling process, registration of cases and rules.
For hosting guests, a 20-minute break was taken and after that, the next speakers spoke.
Ms. Farzana Arefi, one of the professors of the Legal Clinic, spoke about the quantity and quality of the Legal Clinic program and its functions and provided comprehensive information about the programs of the Legal Clinic. Mr. Esmatullah Amiri, a graduate of the previous course of the Legal Clinic, also shared his clinical training experiences with the audience and made suggestions for improving future programs.
Then Mr. Azar Mehr, one of the lawyers of the Legal Clinic, explained the major challenges and problems facing the clients of the Legal Clinic and offered suggestions in this regard for further improvement and efficiency.
The program ended with a concluding speech by Professor Amin Mohseni, Director of Legal Clinic, and the warding certificates to special guests.
