The National Spaghetti Bridge Construction Competition (in term of efficiency) is being held in Afghanistan for the first time.

Spaghetti Bridge Constructions are structures made with only Spaghetti string and glue for training. These structures are smaller than the real structure.

Of course, Spaghetti Structures cannot be defined as patterns, but they are known as models. Unlike the patterns, which only shows the appearance of the structure, the model is a symbol of reality, which expresses the most important features of real structures in a general and simple way. Models are practical tools that can be used to gain an understanding of reality – but not the whole – but a useful and understandable part of it.

One of the most common practical models for engineering students is “Spaghetti Bridge Structure”. Since testing and replacing design in Spaghetti Structures can be done at a much lower cost than in the real world, its importance in the bridge construction industry can be realized.

Kateb University, due to its experimental and educational importance for civil engineering students; will hold the first national Spaghetti Bridge Construction on January 23 and 24, 2019 with the presence of the Minister of Higher Education, Dean of Engineering Faculty of Kabul University, Dean of Engineering Faculty of Polytechnic University, representatives of Kabul Municipality, representatives of the Ministries of Urban Development and Public Works and many other students. These competitions are held in the field of efficiency. This means that the ability of these structures to withstand more weight than the total weight of the structure itself is measured.

Participating in these competitions can be very attractive and exciting for students, in addition to gaining practical experience in designing and building a real bridge in the dimensions of models. In these competitions, students face challenges such as; work and design with structural design software, creativity, the use of analytical and computational courses and responsibility and teamwork, which ultimately give a comprehensive mindset to the design of a bridge structure.

Note:

  • The start date of registration for participation in this program will be announced soon.
  • Follow Kateb University’s Website and Pages for more information.
  • Those who are interested can form a team (maximum 4 people), design and build their own Spaghetti Bridge at this available opportunity.
  • Spaghetti Bridge will be built before the competition and will be handed over to the jury at the beginning of the first day.
  • Intensive training on “Building Spaghetti Bridge” will soon be available on the Website of Kateb University.
  • Subscription is open to the public from all over the country.
